What is a dance convention?

A dance convention is a traveling weekend event where dancers take master classes from celebrity choreographers and industry faculty across styles like jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, tap, and ballet. Most conventions also run an optional competition alongside the classes, plus scholarships, auditions, and callbacks that can launch a dancer’s career.

That’s the key difference from a dance competition, which is a judged event focused on scored performances. A convention’s heart is the training and faculty experience. Many of the biggest brands — Radix, NUVO, JUMP, and 24 Seven — are conventions with a competition built in, which is why you’ll find them on both lists.

Frequently asked questions about dance conventions

What is a dance convention?
A dance convention is a traveling weekend event where dancers take master classes from celebrity choreographers and industry faculty across styles like jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, tap, and ballet. Most conventions also run an optional competition alongside the classes, plus scholarships, auditions, and callbacks. Unlike a pure competition — which is judged performances only — a convention's core is the training and faculty experience.
How is a dance convention different from a dance competition?
A competition is a judged event where routines earn scores and awards. A convention centers on master classes and workshops with well-known faculty, and usually offers an optional competition on the same weekend. Many of the biggest brands — like Radix, NUVO, JUMP, and 24 Seven — are conventions with a competition built in, which is why you'll see them on both lists.
What are the biggest dance conventions?
We're tracking 66 touring convention brands with 595 upcoming tour stops. The largest schedules right now are Beyond The Stars Dance Competition (79 stops), Revel Dance Convention (44 stops), NYCDA (New York City Dance Alliance) (38 stops), Platinum Dance Experience (32 stops), Dance Makers, Inc. (32 stops). Click any brand for its full tour with dates, cities, and venues.
When is dance convention season?
Convention season runs primarily fall through spring, peaking in April with 102 tour stops on the calendar. Most brands tour city-to-city from September through May, with Nationals in summer.
What ages are dance conventions for?
Most dance conventions offer levels for dancers from about age 5 through 18, typically split into mini, junior, teen, and senior divisions, with separate class tracks by age and ability. Many also run classes for adults, teachers, and studio owners. Age divisions vary by brand — check the specific convention for its exact levels.
Do you need a studio or teacher to attend a dance convention?
No — you don't need to belong to a studio to take convention master classes. Many dancers attend with their studio, but independent and solo dancers can register too. Note that some brands require studio or teacher affiliation to enter the optional competition, even though the classes are open to everyone.
Can independent or solo dancers attend a dance convention?
Yes — most conventions welcome any dancer for master classes, whether or not they compete or belong to a studio. Competition entry rules vary by brand, though. See our independent-entries guide for which competitions accept unaffiliated dancers.
How much does a dance convention cost?
Convention registration is typically a few hundred dollars for a full weekend of classes, with competition entry fees charged separately per routine. Prices vary by brand and city — always confirm current pricing on the convention's own website before registering.
