About Summit Dance Challenge
Summit Dance Challenge (SDC) is a Canadian touring dance competition that runs a national regional circuit each spring, with a 2027 season of 20 three- and four-day events from British Columbia and Alberta through Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces. Dancers compete in six age divisions - Mini (7 and under), Petite, Junior, Teen, Senior and Adult (20 and over), taken as of January 1 of the competition year - across three levels: Novice, Competitive and Elite. Entries are offered in fifteen style categories including ballet, character ballet, pointe, contemporary, lyrical, modern, jazz, street jazz, tap, hip hop, musical theatre, acro, song and dance, student choreography and open, as solos, duos and trios, small, large and line groups, and productions. Routines are adjudicated out of 100 by a three-judge panel, and under Summit's conflict-of-interest policy judges are shown only a studio code rather than a studio name. Awards run from adjudicated tiers up to Summit High Platinum, with overall placements, the SDC Title Winner for Elite soloists, the Encore Challenge Dance-Off and Grand Awards totalling over $10,000 in prizes and scholarships; cash awards are issued to studios as scholarships against the following season's entry fees. Entries are studio-registered - Summit does not accept independent entries - and events are livestreamed on SDC TV.

Every routine receives an adjudicated SDC award, with Summit High Platinum the top tier at a score of 95 or above. Overall placements are awarded by level, age division and entry type; a soloist can place only once in the overalls, on their highest-scoring entry. Soloists who perform three or more solos at the Elite level are eligible for the SDC Title Winner award. The Encore Challenge Dance-Off invites up to five group routines chosen on entertainment value into Junior and Senior showdowns judged live on stage, in the style of a televised dance-off, for the Encore Champion title; Novice groups are not selected. Studios can also win the Studio Spirit Award and a pizza party, judged partly on dancer and parent etiquette. Grand Awards, presented in a dedicated session at the end of the weekend, total over $10,000 in prizes and scholarships. Cash awards vary by location with the number of entries in a category, are issued to the dance studio rather than the dancer as scholarships against the following season's entry fees, and are non-transferable between schools or seasons.
Routines are adjudicated out of 100 by a three-judge panel. Dancers enter at one of three levels - Novice (typical range 80-89.99), Competitive (84-92.99) or Elite (90-100) - and soloists scoring 95 or higher (Summit High Platinum) are advanced to Elite for the following season. For duos, trios and groups the registration system averages the levels of the dancers entered (Novice 1, Competitive 2, Elite 3) to recommend a placement, and a studio may request a change only when 60 percent or more of the dancers are registered below the recommendation. Judges may move a dancer or routine up a level on performance quality. Under Summit's conflict-of-interest policy adjudicators see only a studio code and never a studio name; where a potential conflict is identified, that judge's score is dropped and the average of the other two is used, though the dancer still receives all three critiques. Entries over their time limit lose 0.1 per judge for every 15 seconds. Video adjudication is delivered online within a few days of the event.
