Dance Teachers United

Dance Teachers United Dance Competition · 2026-27 Season Schedule

Dance Teachers United is a nonprofit dance organization founded in 1992 that serves dance teachers and students throughout the Southern United States. Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, DTU has grown to represent members from seven states in the region. The organization operates on a unique model that requires all dancers to participate in their annual summer convention in order to be eligible to compete, emphasizing education and community alongside competition. DTU offers both competitions and conventions, with their "Competition of Excellence" featuring a panel of highly qualified judges who provide critique and placement awards. The convention component enriches dance curriculum by offering classes in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, lyrical, and musical theater, taught by Master Teachers and Guest Teaching Artists from around the world. The organization maintains a comprehensive awards system with five levels: Diamond (285-300 points), Platinum (275-284.9), Gold (245-274.9), Emerald (225-244.9), and Silver (under 224.9). Competition divisions accommodate dancers from Petite through Professional levels, including College, Pro-Am, and Showcase categories. DTU's mission focuses on enhancing the status of dance professionals while maintaining the highest standards in dance education and services.
