About the Program

The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Richmond offers a Dance Major (12 units) and Dance Minor (6 units) within the School of Arts & Sciences. Students pursue coursework in technique, composition and improvisation, somatic studies, dance history and theory, design elements, and capstone projects, with technique offerings in ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, contact improvisation, dances of the African diaspora, and salsa. Performance opportunities include the University Dancers ensemble and presentations at the Modlin Center for the Arts.

Coursework

Technique offerings include Ballet (I, II, Advanced, Pointe & Variations), Jazz (II, Advanced), Hip Hop, Contemporary (I, II, Advanced), Contact Improvisation, Dances of the African Diaspora, and Salsa. Core curriculum spans technique, composition/improvisation, somatic studies, dance history and theory, design elements, and capstone projects. Major requires a C- or better in all coursework; minor requires a 2.00 GPA with no grade below C-.
