About the Program
The UNCG School of Dance offers a highly intensive, pre-professional BFA in Dance for students aiming for careers in professional performance, choreography, or dance instruction. Dance styles taught include Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, African, Hip-Hop, Tap, and Dance for Musical Theatre. UNCG is the only university in the North Carolina system that offers graduate degrees in Dance, and the only program where graduate students with initial Dance K-12 teaching licensure can earn advanced dance teacher licensure. 50% of faculty are faculty of color.

Recent guest choreographers include Camille A. Brown, Kristin Daniel, Gerri Houlihan, Juel D. Lane, Helen Simoneau, and Maleek Washington. Audition required for BFA (not for minors). Students access American Dance Festival via audition-based scholarship.

Facilities
Seven dance studios, a fully-equipped dance theater, a screen dance editing classroom, dressing rooms, and an interior garden courtyard reserved for dance students. Live accompaniment provided for many technique classes. Arts-based living community 'Studio 91' in Cone Residence Hall.
Performance Opportunities
10-12 concerts each year with many undergraduate performance opportunities; typically undergraduates showcase choreography in three to four concerts a year. 'Prime Movers' is a social and educational group responsible for annual concerts of student work. Delta Chi Xi Honorary Dance Fraternity.

UNCG is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance. Only university in the NC system offering graduate degrees in Dance. Faculty affiliations include the American College Dance Association, National Dance Education Organization, and Dance Studies Association (as of July 2026).
Alumni Outcomes
Graduates pursue careers in performance and choreography, arts administration, and teaching (school or community). Additional career paths include lighting/costume design for dance, dance science/medicine, dance history, dance notation, graphic design, dance photography, dance writing, and dance technology.
