About the Program

The Major in Dance in the University of Kentucky's Department of Theatre and Dance educates its students in the history, theory, creativity, practice, and performance of dance within the context of a broad liberal arts education. The central focus involves creativity and choreography through the lens of diverse dance genres with an emphasis on contemporary practice. It describes itself as the only program in Kentucky with an emphasis on Modern Dance, Creativity, and Research-based choreography.

Coursework

45-credit BA. Accepted students receive class placement level in ballet, jazz, and modern technique. Curriculum includes dance history, theory, choreography, and improvisation. Designed for flexibility to double major or add minors/certificates (Theatre, Musical Theatre, Arts Administration, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Business). Audition required for major admission (in-person or video; video deadline May 1 for fall entrance). The Minor in Dance is open to all majors and includes ballet, jazz, modern, and musical theatre dance plus choreography and improvisation.

Performance Opportunities

Main Season and Studio Season productions; participation in the American College Dance Festival; workshops and master classes.
