About the Program

Founded in 1969, The Ailey School has grown into a world-renowned educational institution housed in the bright studios of The Joan Weill Center for Dance in New York City. Led by Directors Tracy Inman and Melanie Person, the School's curriculum-based programs echo Alvin Ailey's philosophy, providing students with the highest caliber of multidisciplinary training while encouraging them to explore their own creative voice. The diverse faculty includes former members of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, as well as leading instructors in Horton, Graham-based modern, West African, and many other techniques. The Ailey School offers a joint BFA in Dance with Fordham University alongside its own Certificate, Scholarship, and Independent Study programs.

Coursework

Ailey/Fordham BFA is a joint 4-year degree requiring concurrent enrollment. Certificate Program is a 3-year conservatory-style program (ages 17-23). Junior Division (ages 3-17) includes First Steps (ages 3-6) and Pre-Professional Program (ages 7-17). Professional Division (ages 17-25), Summer Intensives, and Ailey/Professional Performing Arts School (grades 9-10 partnership).

Alumni Outcomes

Alumni have gone on to dance with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ailey II. Alumni also perform on Broadway and for major companies including Ballet Hispanico, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Martha Graham Dance Company.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

The Ailey School provides financial support for hundreds of students who otherwise might not have access to premier dance education. Includes the Alvin Ailey Scholarship Program (a rolling annual awards program with Level 1 and Level 2 tuition support tracks, ages 17-21).
