About the Program
The Division of Dance in SMU's Meadows School of the Arts offers professional dance training within the context of a comprehensive liberal arts education. The B.F.A. in Dance Performance develops disciplined, versatile dance artists through a balanced study of ballet, modern and jazz techniques, complemented by theoretical studies including dance history, kinesiology, music theory/history and choreography, plus extensive performance opportunities in venues across the Dallas Arts District.

Coursework
80 total credit hours in dance (minimum 47 in technique). Two technique classes daily in first two years; minimum one per day junior/senior years. Afro-Modern technique required during the eight-semester curriculum. Four terms of dance composition required beginning junior year. Theoretical studies include dance history, kinesiology, music theory/history, and choreography.

Facilities
Sharp Studio (grand piano, lighting and sound systems), Studio 1430 (experimental mirrorless space), and Studio B120 'The Bowling Alley' (sprung floors, video/projection systems).
Performance Opportunities
Minimum four ensemble performances required. Performance options include Bob Hope Theatre concerts, noontime Danceworks in the Grand Atrium, Dallas Arts District venues, and Meadows at the Winspear collaborations.
