About the Program

The Pomona College Dance Department explores dance as a performing art and shows how movement studies inform our view of the human experience. As a dance major or minor, students practice a disciplined approach to contemporary techniques, ballet, and an array of cultural styles; consider social, political, religious, gender and sexuality issues through the lens of dance; and develop a heightened awareness of the body as an instrument for lifelong healthy engagement with movement. The dance major offers concentrations in Performance and Movement Studies.

Coursework

Cultural styles classes include Flamenco, Balinese, and African Aesthetics. Movement analysis courses include Language of the Body and Anatomy and Kinesiology. Additional coursework in Traditions of World Dance, Dance/Ethnicity/Nationalism, Composition, and the Creative Movement Lab. Performance concentrators focus on technique, composition, and repertory; Movement Studies concentrators complete a written thesis in interdisciplinary contexts (neuroscience, religious studies, psychology).

Facilities

Pendleton Dance Center serves as the department's primary facility on the Pomona College campus.

Performance Opportunities

Joint concerts with Scripps Dance including 'In the Works' fall concert; student-run concerts; and an annual, fully produced spring concert featuring work by senior majors, faculty, and guest artists.
