About the Program

The Missouri Valley College Dance program offers a Bachelor's degree (46 credit hours) and a Minor in Dance, based in the School of Arts & Humanities in Marshall, MO. Majoring in dance allows students to view, analyze and appreciate dance through historical and cultural perspectives, with training in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, improvisation, and composition. Small class sizes give students opportunities to perform, choreograph, and design for productions, with dance students featured in three major productions annually and participation in a Repertory Dance Ensemble. Students must complete a faculty-supervised senior project. An audition is required before declaring the major or minor.

Coursework

Bachelor's degree requires 46 credit hours (catalog lists 46-59 total including electives). Core courses include Conditioning for Dancers, Dance Improvisation, Choreography I, History of Dance, Dance Portfolio, and Senior Project in Dance, plus technique courses (Ballet I-III, Jazz I-II, Modern I-III, Tap I-II), performance credits, and dance electives. Curriculum also covers improvisation, composition, dance history, and dance pedagogy. Minor in Dance = 22 total credit hours (10 technique, 9 non-dance technique, 3 dance electives).

Performance Opportunities

Three major productions annually; Repertory Dance Ensemble participation; dance workshops with local communities; choreography and design opportunities for productions.
