About the Program

The Dance Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato, housed in the Department of Theatre & Dance within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, is described as "a dynamic and growing field of study that provides students with a rich program of study, five degree options, diverse performance opportunities." Offerings include a BFA, a Bachelor of Science in Dance (active), Dance Therapy Pre-Professional (BS), Dance Private Studio Teaching (BS), a Dance Minor, and a Theatre and Dance MFA. Students train in ballet, modern/contemporary, jazz, tap, and Afro-Caribbean forms, and perform across three venues (Ted Paul Theatre, Andreas Theatre, ETC Theatre).

Coursework

Afro-Caribbean dance is taught (listed in the Dance Minor core styles). Core coursework in the Dance catalog includes ballet technique, modern dance technique with improvisation, dance improvisation, dance composition/choreography, dance history (1500s to present), dance somatics, dance production (costumes, lighting, sound), and a cross-cultural dance survey / world dance forms. The Dance BA is currently closed for admissions; the Dance BS is active. Dance Education (K-12) BS is CAEP-accredited.

Facilities

The program operates across three performance venues: Ted Paul Theatre (mainstage productions and dance concerts), Andreas Theatre (studio shows), and ETC Theatre (open-stage format). Multiple dance studios are available.

Performance Opportunities

Two dance concerts per academic semester plus student-selected studio productions. The Andreas Guest Dance Artists program brings annual master classes with visiting artists at no fee. BFA admission and program placement require an audition.
