Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance

About the Program

The Martha Graham School is the oldest professional school of dance in the United States and the only one primarily focused on the Martha Graham Technique and repertory. Classes are taught by faculty who are current or former members of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and who trained with Martha Graham herself or with her first-generation acolytes. The school offers a Two-Year Certificate Program, an Independent Program, a Teacher Training Program, and three Advanced Studies Certificates (Composition, Performance, Graham 2), along with the leading Teens@Graham youth outreach program.

Coursework

Focus on the Martha Graham Technique and repertory along with theory, pedagogy, and related disciplines. Additional youth outreach program (Teens@Graham) offers dancers ages 13-18 the opportunity to improve vocational skills through Graham Technique, composition, and repertory. Also runs Summer Intensive and Young Artists Summer Intensive.

Martha Graham Dance Center at 1501 Broadway, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10036 (relocated January 2026 from 55 Bethune St/Westbeth Artists Housing). 30,000 sq ft with six dance studios and a 150-seat black box theater. 30-year lease.

Performance Opportunities

Students perform in Graham repertory works. Graduates go on to careers with the Martha Graham Dance Company, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Jose Limon Dance Company, Buglisi Dance Theatre, Battery Dance Company, and other companies worldwide.
