About the Program

Kenyon College's Department of Dance, Drama, and Film offers dance as one of three majors (dance, theatre, film) plus a minor in dance. Nine faculty members teach roughly three dozen courses in dance, drama and film yearly with an average class size of about 20. The dance major (BA) requires 15 courses including core work in dance history, choreography, and kinesiology, plus a minimum of six repeatable technique courses across styles such as ballet, modern/postmodern, jazz, West African, Bharatanatyam, and tap. Facilities include the Bolton Dance Studio and performance venues Bolton Theater and Hill Theater.

Core major courses: DANC 105 Introduction to Dance Studies, DANC 215 Contemporary Dance History, DANC 227 The Choreographer I, DANC 322 Dance Kinesiology, DANC 493 Senior Capstone. Technique includes Beginning/Intermediate Ballet (DANC 109/209), Modern/Postmodern Dance Practices Beginning through Advanced (DANC 108/208/308), Contact Improvisation (DANC 106), and Fundamentals of Dance Technique (DANC 107) which rotates styles including jazz, West African, Bharatanatyam, and tap. Also offers Screendance (DANC 230). Major requires DDF 300 Technical Practicum or DDF 301 Performance Practicum.

Facilities

Bolton Dance Studio (opened 1981) plus performance venues including Bolton Theater and Hill Theater (Shaffer Dance Studio also used for dance).

Performance Opportunities

The department produces faculty and student-directed productions through the Kenyon College Dramatic Club; students perform and crew all productions, with the co-curricular program serving as a laboratory for classroom teaching.
