About the Program

The mission of JCSU Dance is to foster the growth of conscious artists who are willing to challenge and enhance the field of dance. Our curriculum concentrates on classical and contemporary Concert Dance forms such as European-derived dance forms and African Diaspora. Students major in Dance at this private HBCU in Charlotte, NC, training in composition, history and research, pedagogy, and dance sciences, and take movement classes in Modern, Ballet, and Jazz.

Coursework

Required/core coursework includes Dance Conditioning, African Dance, Kinesiology, Dance Composition, and History of Dance. Electives include Tap, Pointe, Hip-hop, and Pedagogy. Curriculum spans composition, history and research, pedagogy, dance sciences, and theory/practice. Minors take Modern, Ballet, Jazz, and African Dance plus electives (Tap, Pointe, Pedagogy). Audition (in-person or video) required for acceptance into the Dance Major.

Performance Opportunities

Students are encouraged to audition for the JCSU Repertory Dance Company, a traveling company that performs locally and out of state. The program presents fall and spring dance concerts. Students teach dance in the local Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools through a K-12 partnership, and internships are available with theme parks, cruise ships, dance companies, and studios.
