About the Program

The Peabody Conservatory BFA Dance program at Johns Hopkins University prepares exceptional 21st-century performers, choreographers, teachers, and future leaders dedicated to pushing the boundaries between dance and science and expanding the role and relevance of dance in both traditional and non-traditional contexts. Studying dance at Johns Hopkins, a premier research institution, gives students the opportunity to make connections between the study of dance, science, technology, and the humanities. All BFA students take Ballet 1-4 and Modern 1-4 concurrently, study somatic approaches to movement and choreography, perform in a pre-professional student dance company, and collaborate with guest artists. Launched in 2018 under founding chair danah bella, the program uniquely allows students to double major and integrate training in performing arts medicine and movement science.

Coursework

Core technique is Ballet 1-4 and Modern 1-4 taken concurrently each semester (must earn at least B- in each to remain in good standing). Curriculum emphasizes somatic approaches to movement, choreography, and an interdisciplinary dance-and-science focus (performing arts medicine, movement therapy, biophysics research). Includes a one-year liberal arts Core Curriculum (6 credits); students may double major.

Performance Opportunities

Students perform during all four years. The Peabody Dance Ensemble, an award-winning pre-professional dance company, invites fourth-year students to showcase original and repertory work by faculty and guest artists.
