About the Program

The goal of the Dance and Movement Studies Department is to help students find and develop their own voices and identities through classes, workshops, projects, and productions that consider dance from creative, technical, historical, and scientific contexts. Hamilton College, a private liberal arts college in Clinton, NY, offers a concentration (major) and minor in Dance and Movement Studies leading to the Bachelor of Arts, integrating dance technique (ballet, contemporary, jazz, martial arts), choreography, dance theory/history, and Asian and Asian American performance.

Coursework

Concentration requires seven core courses (DANCE-201, 203, 205, 305, 307, plus DANCE-550 or 560) and four semesters of technique across at least two different styles of dance/movement (ballet, contemporary, martial arts). Curriculum also includes martial arts and dance, Garth Fagan Technique, and Asian and Asian American performance. Theory courses explore the body from anthropological, physiological, psychological, and philosophical perspectives. Senior capstone options: Senior Thesis (research/field study) or Senior Performance/Choreography. Minor requires five courses (2-3 theory + 2-3 technique, no more than two technique courses in the same style).

Facilities

Facilities include the Kennedy Center for the Theatre and Studio Arts and a dance studio in the Blood Fitness Center. Related performance/arts venues on campus include Wellin Hall, Minor Theater, List Dance Studio, and Beinecke Events Barn.
