About the Program

The School of Dance at George Mason University, housed within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, offers "intensive training, immediate performance opportunities, and the resources of a major university," combining conservatory training in a liberal arts setting. The BFA is a performance-oriented contemporary dance program designed to prepare students professionally as performers, choreographers, educators, and active leaders of the dance community, with daily technical training in modern dance and ballet. A Visual and Performing Arts MFA with a Dance concentration, grounded in the modern dance genre, emphasizes mastery in performance, choreography, and teaching in higher education.

Coursework

BFA is 123 credits with core coursework in modern dance, ballet, anatomy and kinesiology for dancers, somatic studies, dance history, teaching, theater production, choreography, and Senior Synthesis. MFA is a 60-credit program grounded in the modern dance genre. Additional Global Dance Minor covers global dance forms and creative movement.

Facilities

Facilities include 4 studios, a conditioning lab, and a treatment room with a full-time athletic trainer, plus a 2,000-seat Concert Hall used for performances and master classes.

Performance Opportunities

The program offers numerous performance opportunities through courses such as Dance Performance, Residency Workshops, Advanced Dance Production, and Advanced Dance Performance, plus an active guest artist residency program and performances in a 2,000-seat Concert Hall.
