About the Program

The Dickinson College Department of Theatre and Dance offers a Dance major, a Dance minor, and an inter-arts Dance & Music major at this private liberal arts college in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The dance curriculum spans classical ballet (in partnership with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet), modern and contemporary technique, jazz, choreography and dance composition, human anatomy and movement, and global/world dance studies including African dance, all within a liberal arts framework that supports civic engagement and international study/performance abroad.

Coursework

Dance major requires ~11 credits including THDA 102 (Introduction to Global Dance Studies), 204 (Fundamentals of Choreography and Dance Composition), 215 (The Thinking Body: Human Anatomy and Movement), 300, and 316, plus four semesters of dance technique. Technique courses: THDA 111/211/311/411 Classical Ballet (Beginning through Certificate/Pre-professional), THDA 121/221 Movement Studio (modern, contemporary, Pilates, yoga, hip hop, jazz), THDA 123/223 Jazz Dance, THDA 125 African/International Dance. The Dance & Music inter-arts major is a 13-course program (THDA 102, 204; MUAC 101, 102, 125, 126, 354; plus two credits of dance technique). Classical ballet training offered via partnership with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB), which also has an 8-course ballet certificate program.
