About the Program
CMU's dance program takes a broad, liberal arts approach to studying dance and movement. The curriculum emphasizes technical versatility across multiple dance styles while exploring the historical roots and current trends in the field. Students engage in rigorous technical training alongside creative experimentation within a supportive learning community. Housed in the Department of Theatre Arts in Grand Junction, Colorado, the program offers a BA in Dance and a Dance Minor (with a BFA in Dance being phased out as of the 2025-2026 catalog). Students must successfully audition for acceptance into the program.

Coursework
BA core coursework includes DANC 220 Moving Anatomy and Wellness, DANC 310 Dance Pedagogy, DANC 315 History and Philosophy of Dance, DANC 355 Choreography, DANC 360 Movement Analysis and Creative Practice, and DANC 494 Senior Dance Capstone. Also covers somatic practices, conditioning, movement analysis, dance history, dance company, and experiential anatomy. Note: the BFA in Dance is no longer accepting new students as of the 2025-2026 catalog year.
Performance Opportunities
Semester performances beginning freshman year, faculty and student-produced concerts, American College Dance Association (ACDA) conference attendance and performances with choreography adjudication, Student Showcase, Senior Capstone presentations, and guest choreographer collaborations. Students also participate in the student-led Dance Society.
